What the Water Taught Me About the Word

What the Water Taught Me

About the Word

There’s a photo I took years ago. My Bible resting near rushing water.

I didn’t take it to create something beautiful. I took it because something in me needed to understand something deeper.

At the time, I didn’t have polished words for faith.

I didn’t have a routine.

I didn’t have confidence in what I was doing.

I just knew I was… thirsty.

The Moment

The water was loud that day.

Constant.

Moving.

Unstoppable.

It didn’t rush all at once in a dramatic wave.

It just kept going.

Steady.

Persistent.

Faithful in its movement.

And I remember sitting there, watching it, thinking—

This is what the Word must be like.

Not always loud in my life.

Not always dramatic.

But steady.

Working in ways I couldn’t always see.

Smoothing edges I didn’t even know were sharp.

Because that’s what water does, isn’t it?

It softens stone.
It shapes landscapes.
It carves paths over time.

Not with force…

…but with consistency.

And maybe that’s where we get it wrong.

We think opening the Bible should feel powerful every time.

We expect clarity.
Emotion.
Answers.

But what if it’s more like water?

Quiet some days.

Simple most days.

But always doing something beneath the surface.

There were seasons in my life where I felt dry.

Rough.
Worn down.
A little hardened by things I didn’t expect life to bring.

And I didn’t need more noise.

I needed something that would stay.

The Word does that.

Not all at once.

But over time.

A few minutes here.
A verse there.
A thought written in the margin.

And slowly…

things begin to shift.

Not because you did it perfectly.

But because you showed up.

That photo reminds me of something I still need to remember today:

You don’t have to understand everything.

You don’t have to feel something every time.

You don’t have to do this “right.”

You just have to come back.

The Word

John 7:37

“Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink.”

The Quiet Invitation

If you’ve been feeling dry…

or unsure…

or like you don’t even know where to begin—

Start small.

Open your Bible.
Read a few lines.
Sit with it for a minute.

That’s enough.

Because over time…

the Word has a way of doing what water does best.

From the table,

Pondering Prompt:
Where in your life do you feel dry right now?
What might it look like to simply sit with God for a few quiet minutes today?
